I'm Paul Butler, a personal trainer in Southampton. Eighteen years, over a thousand men and women coached, and one rule that hasn't shifted in all that time: the plan has to fit your actual life, not an idealised version of it.
I train people face to face at JD Gyms in Bitterne, and I coach online across the whole of the UK. The fundamentals are the same either way — sleep, nutrition, hydration, steps, training, and someone who actually notices when you go quiet for a fortnight.
No fad diets. No gimmicks. No 6am boot camp in the rain unless that's genuinely your thing.
Face-to-face personal training with me in Southampton is £50 an hour at JD Gyms Bitterne. Online coaching runs from £99 a month for Online Lite, £149 for Premium and £299 for 1:1 Elite. No contracts, no joining fee, and the prices are on this page rather than hidden behind an enquiry form.

Both work. They suit different weeks, and plenty of people start with one and move to the other.

Most of my clients are online — that's the bulk of what I do. Face to face is for people who want me in the room, and there are only so many hours in a week for it.
Face-to-face sessions run at JD Gyms, West End Road, Bitterne. I live in Bitterne, so it's my local, and it's a straightforward drive or bus from most of east Southampton.
Easy reach:
If you're the far side of the city — Shirley, Millbrook, Bassett — it's still doable, you just want to be honest with yourself about whether you'll make that drive twice a week in February. If the answer's no, online is the better call, and I'd rather tell you that up front than take your money.
Outside the patch entirely? Online coaching covers the whole of the UK, and it's the same me on the other end.
Busy men and women, mostly 30s and beyond, who've started and stopped enough times to have lost a bit of confidence in themselves. Not aspiring bodybuilders. People who want to feel stronger, sleep better, stop being knackered by three in the afternoon, and be a bit proud of themselves again.
If you want a 12-week shred and a coach who shouts, I'm not your man. If you want the fundamentals done properly and someone in your corner while you build them, I probably am.
Two things that come up constantly, both written up properly: why you might not be losing weight in a calorie deficit and my honest take on Mounjaro and Ozempic.
At two I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, after doctors gave my parents two weeks. I was told I'd never see 20 or father children. I've been proving that wrong ever since.
The daily physio, the 30-plus tablets, the hospital stays — that taught me more about discipline and consistency than any course ever did. It also gave me a reason to take health seriously that had nothing to do with vanity.
When my daughter Amelia arrived, something clicked. I started running, then training, then coaching. That was 18 years and more than a thousand clients ago.
I'm not a hype merchant. I coach the way I live: discipline, consistency, and a bit of honesty. The longer version is on the homepage.
Along the way: the Southern Daily Echo covered the story, Sam Fraser interviewed me on BBC Radio Solent, the NHS featured me in their "Meet the patients" series, and I was named Regional Personal Trainer of the Year.
Eighteen years in the job and more than a thousand clients coached. That last one isn't a certificate, and it's the part most trainers can't claim.
"He is extremely likeable and has a very good style of encouragement — knowing how far to push to maximise your workout time, but not too much to put you off returning."
"He helped me to lose over a stone in weight and put my body on the right path to being more healthy and stronger."
"Paul's knowledge of fitness is second to none and he always has fresh ideas for workouts, so going to the gym doesn't become routine."
"I would definitely recommend Paul's training to anyone who wants fast results and great value for money."
"Thank you so much Paul for helping me achieve beyond my target. Couldn't have asked for a better trainer."

Here's the actual shape of it.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Before you start | Short onboarding form — goals, schedule, training history, injuries. Five minutes. |
| Week 1 | Your personalised training and nutrition plan lands in MyPT Hub within 48 hours, with calorie and protein targets and sessions that fit your real week. |
| Week 2 | First check-in. We look at what actually happened, not what was supposed to happen, and adjust. |
| Week 3 | Usually where the honest conversation lives. Something's slipped. We fix the system, not your character. |
| Week 4 | Review, progress the programme, set the next block. |
Face to face with me is £50 an hour at JD Gyms Bitterne. Online coaching is £99 a month for Lite, £149 for Premium and £299 for 1:1 Elite. Most Southampton trainers don't publish a price at all, so ask early — and ask what's included, because a cheap session with no plan behind it is the expensive option.
JD Gyms on West End Road in Bitterne. I live in Bitterne, so it's my local. It's an easy run from Bitterne Park, Woolston, Sholing, Thornhill, West End, Townhill Park and Bursledon, and a short drive from Hedge End, Netley or Eastleigh. Further out, online usually makes more sense.
Both, though online is the bulk of what I do. In person suits you if you want hands-on coaching on technique, or you know you'll show up when someone's expecting you. Online suits a week that moves around. Same fundamentals either way, same coach.
For face-to-face sessions you'll need access to the gym, and we'll sort exactly how on the first call before you pay anything. For online coaching you need nothing — your programme is built around whatever you've actually got, whether that's a gym, home kit, or a pair of trainers.
No, it's the normal starting point. Most people who come to me have started and stopped several times and assume that's a character flaw. It isn't — it's a plan that didn't fit their life. We start smaller than you'd expect and build from something you can actually repeat.
Yes, and without the sermon. The drugs handle appetite; they don't build the habits, the strength or the muscle that keep the weight off afterwards. That's the work I do alongside them. I've written up what happens when you come off them.
Honestly, the first fortnight changes how you feel — sleep, energy, appetite — before it changes the scales. Visible change usually lands somewhere in weeks four to eight, depending on your starting point and how consistent the week is. Anyone promising you a number is guessing.
A Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training and Level 2 Fitness Instructing, plus Sports Nutrition, Nutrition and Weight Management, TRX, Studio Cycling, Circuit Training and Gym-Based Boxing. Eighteen years in the job and over a thousand clients coached, which is the part no certificate covers.
No. Online coaching is monthly and you can cancel whenever you want, and Premium carries a full results guarantee. Face-to-face sessions are paid as you go. If it isn't working I'd rather have the conversation than hold you to a term.
Online coaching covers the whole of the UK, and most of my clients are online. You get the same personalised programme, the same nutrition targets and the same weekly check-ins. The only thing you lose is me correcting your hip position in person.
Fifteen minutes, phone or video, no pitch and no pressure. You'll leave knowing whether this is the right fit — whether we work together or not. Usually available within 48 hours.
