Why Coach With Paul Butler? The Honest Case
Choosing a coach is, if you'll forgive me, a weighty decision.
So let's get the awkward bit out of the way early. I'm an online coach and personal trainer, which means an article by me about why my coaching works is a bit like a barber telling you that you could probably do with a trim. Fair enough.
That's why I'm not going to ask you to take my word for anything. What follows is the actual evidence: 18 years of coaching, more than 1,000 men and women helped, a 5 star Google rating built on reviews from people who've trained with me for up to a decade, and the reason I take health more seriously than almost anyone you'll meet. Read it, weigh it up, and hold it to the same standard you'd hold any weight loss coach, health coach or personal trainer worth their salt. The photos above are a few of my clients. We'll get to mine further down.
What working with me actually looks like
Online coaching has a reputation problem, and it's earned. Too much of it is a PDF, a payment link and a coach who forgets your name by Thursday. That's not coaching. That's a very expensive filing system.
Proper online weight loss coaching, the kind I run, looks like this:
- A fully personalised training programme, built for your goals, your schedule and the equipment you actually have.
- Nutrition coaching with calorie and macro targets, so food becomes information rather than guesswork or guilt.
- Weekly check-ins and honest feedback, because a plan nobody reviews is just a document.
- Direct messaging support for the moments between check-ins when real life throws something at you.
- Everything in one app, with your programme updated as you progress. Your plan lands within 48 hours of onboarding.
The thing that holds it all together is that it's designed around your actual life. If your plan only works during a perfect week, you don't have a plan. You have a fantasy with a spreadsheet. My clients are busy people with jobs, kids and commutes, so the structure bends without breaking. That's the whole design brief.
After 18 years, here's the one thing I believe more strongly than anything else in this industry: you don't need a hack. You need someone honest telling you the boring truth and holding you accountable to it. That's the job. Everything else is packaging.
The proof: 18 years and more than 1,000 people
Coaching is an industry where people arrive with a six-pack and a ring light and quietly disappear eighteen months later. I've been doing this since 2008. Longevity isn't glamorous, but it tells you something no advert can: enough people got results, for long enough, to keep a coach in business for nearly two decades.
I'm also not a theorist. Alongside the online coaching I still run around 25 hours of face-to-face personal training every week. That's where the philosophy comes from. Watch enough people up close, year after year, and you learn what actually sticks: get the house in order first. Sleep, food, steps and consistency before anything clever. I've watched people chase the advanced stuff before the basics were handled dozens of times, and it never, ever sticks.
Over 1,000 clients on, the range is the point. I've coached complete beginners and experienced lifters, shift workers and new parents, people living with chronic illness and people in their seventies doing their first proper strength work. Different bodies, different lives, same fundamentals, personalised properly. Premium coaching even carries a full results guarantee, because after this long I know what happens when someone follows the structure.
What clients say when nobody's holding a clipboard
Reviews are where you should judge any coach, but read them properly. Stars are the least useful bit. Anyone can collect five stars from their mates in a weekend. What you're actually looking for is specifics, and time. Nobody stays with a coach for ten years out of politeness.
"I have known Paul for 14 years and been trained by him for 10 years. As a trainer he is second to none and shows this by really caring about his clients. He tailors every session to my individual needs and goals and has made me a far stronger and healthier person."Bob · Google Review
"He didn't just give me a training plan. He gave me the tools and support to make real progress. He remembers the smaller details that most coaches would forget."Matt Bond · Google Review
"As someone living with M.E., I was nervous about finding a PT who got it. He adapts every workout to my current abilities and never makes me feel guilty on days when I can't manage much."Julie Thornely · Google Review
"I came back when I was more focused and ready to be held accountable. No judgement, just encouragement. I finally feel more comfortable in my own skin."Tracey · Google Review
"He really motivated me and helped me set up manageable habits. He understood what I wanted to achieve, but also how to fit it into my busy life."Ana Gyorkos · Google Review
Let's be honest about why anyone books a coach in the first place: you want a transformation. Quite right too. My clients want exactly that, and they get it. Stronger, leaner, back in trousers they'd given up on, more comfortable in their own skin. The photo at the top of this page is a small sample. But notice what the reviews actually describe: tailoring, listening, remembering details, adapting to illness, coming back without judgement. That's the machinery that makes a transformation last. A before-and-after photo shows you week twelve. It never shows you year five, and year five is the bit that matters.
For what it's worth, the story behind the coaching has been covered in the press too. The Southern Daily Echo wrote about it back in 2016, which we'll get to below, because it's the part of all this I didn't choose.
A transformation only counts if you keep it
Here's where I part company with a lot of the industry. The standard playbook for a dramatic transformation is a brutal calorie deficit, hours of cardio and a countdown timer. And it works, briefly. That's the trap. Cut calories too hard and your energy goes, your training suffers, you lose muscle along with the fat, and the plan becomes impossible to live with. So you stop. The weight comes back, often with interest, and you end up a stone heavier and twice as cynical by Christmas. I've written about why a calorie deficit stalls if you want the full picture.
That cycle has a name: yo-yo dieting. It's the most common story new clients arrive with, and it never works long term because it was never designed to. It's designed to sell you the next round. If that pattern sounds familiar, why you keep starting over is the honest read on it.
A transformation done properly looks different. A sensible deficit you can actually hold while working a demanding job. Strength training, so the weight you lose is fat rather than muscle. Habits that survive a bad week, a holiday and a birthday cake. It looks slower on a spreadsheet. It's faster in real life, because you only have to do it once.
This is the part I pride myself on more than any photo. Not just clients who got results, but clients who still have them years later, living comfortably in bodies they're happy with instead of fighting. You deserve the result, and you deserve to keep it for a long and healthy life. I coach it that way because I genuinely care what happens to you after the pictures are taken.
Trust looks boring, and that's the point
Trustworthy coaching doesn't look exciting. It looks like admin done properly. Here's what that means in practice:
- No contracts. Cancel anytime. You stay because it's working, not because a document says you must.
- Public prices. Coaching runs from £149 to £299 a month and it's all on the website. If a coach hides their prices, ask yourself why. It's rarely because they're embarrassed about how low they are.
- A way in that costs nothing. The Starting Point: five days of the fundamentals by email, then a personalised four week programme. No card details, no strings. Judge how I coach before a penny changes hands.
- A 15-minute call, no charge. No pitch, no pressure. If a different coach, or no coach at all, is the right answer for you, I'll say so on the call.
And I'll be straight with you: I'm not for everyone. I will absolutely get you a transformation, but I won't get you one the wrong way. If you want a starvation plan, a coach who shouts at you at 5am, or someone promising a stone gone by a fortnight on Friday, I'm the wrong choice, and I'd rather tell you that now. I'm also not a doctor. If you have a medical condition, speak to your GP before starting anything new. I spend enough time with my own medical team to know that advice is worth following.
Why I take this more seriously than most
Most coaches found fitness through sport or aesthetics. I found it because it was that or nothing.

- Age two
Diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis after doctors gave me two weeks to live. My parents were told I'd never live past 20 and would never father children.
- Childhood
Physiotherapy twice a day, a nebuliser three times a day, a cocktail of tablets, and a hospital admission with nearly every chest infection.
- Age 27
My daughter Amelia was born through IVF, the child I was told I'd never have. As soon as I saw her, I knew I had to be here for her. I stopped living on borrowed time and started training.
- 2008
Qualified as a personal trainer. The thing that was keeping me alive became the thing I do for other people.
- Since then
Competed in natural bodybuilding to prove someone with CF could stand on that stage, and at 70kg deadlifted three times my own bodyweight. Amelia is now 19.
- Now, at 46
Still on 30-odd tablets a day, still training daily, still coaching. My knees have opinions, but my lungs are behaving.
I've got Cystic Fibrosis, so breathing is already a part-time job. I was never going to build my coaching around punishing cardio and gimmicks. Living with CF taught me more about discipline and consistency than any course ever could, because for me the basics were never optional. Sleep, food, movement, done daily, whether I fancied it or not. That's literally what has kept me alive and out of hospital.
So when I tell you that consistency beats perfection, it isn't a caption. It's the reason I'm still here to write this. Health was never vanity for me. It was survival. And that's exactly how seriously I'll take yours.

Questions people actually ask
Is online coaching as good as face-to-face?
Done properly, yes, and for busy people it's often better, because the accountability follows you rather than living at the gym. I do both every week, and the online clients who check in weekly progress just as well as the ones I see in person.
How quickly will I see a transformation?
Honest answer: it depends where you're starting from, but most people notice visible change within a couple of months and a transformation they're proud of inside a year. Slower than the adverts promise, and it sticks. The fastest way to lose a stone forever is the steady way, because you only have to do it once.
I've tried coaches and plans before and nothing stuck. Why would this be different?
That's where most people begin, honestly. Plans usually fail because they're built for an idealised week that doesn't exist. We start from the week you actually have. And if you fall off, you come back to encouragement, not a telling off.
Am I too unfit, too old or too far gone to start?
No. I've coached beginners, people managing chronic conditions and clients in their seventies. The plan meets you where you are. That's what personalised means.
Do you coach women as well as men?
Always have. Over 1,000 clients in 18 years covers men and women across every starting point, and the reviews above speak for themselves.
Book the 15-minute call at paulbutlercoach.co.uk. No pitch, no pressure, honest answers, even if the honest answer is that you don't need me. It's the quickest way to find out whether we'd actually work well together.
Not ready to talk yet? Take The Starting Point instead: five days of the fundamentals, then a four week programme built round your life. No cost, no catch, and no obligation to ever speak to me.
This article is general information, not medical advice. If you're managing a health condition, please speak to your GP before starting a new training or nutrition plan. Client quotes are from public Google reviews of Paul Butler Coach.
